This does not seem to work with sata drives. It gives
hdparm -d 1 /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

I have nvram-installed and it shuts down the box every night.
