vdr-xine not switching

I've just installed vdr-1.4.1 and start it with:
./vdr -P'xine -q -r -s' \
-P'remote -l /dev/lircd' \
-P'skincurses' \
-P'dvd' \
-P'epgsearch' \
-P'sysinfo' \
-P'mplayer' \
-P'mp3 -c /media/video/vdr-1.4.1/plugins/cache/image/mp3/ -i 
image_convert.sh' \
-P'pvrinput' \
-s '~vdruser/vdr-1.4.1/halt.sh'

When xine starts, vdr is stuck in 'Skin: Text Mode'.  If I go into 
skincurses OSD and change the OSD to vdr-panels, it's fine until the next 
restart. Then it reverts to skincurses mode.

any ideas?
