I think it has something to do with integers vs pointers and 64-bit
archs.  Some info eg. here: http://www.linuxonly.nl/docs/sentinel/ .
g++ 4.1.0 complains about use of 0 as the sentinel on both i386 and
x86_64 here though, and using NULL on neither.
