It's even worse with a motorised dish, since it starts moving randomly 
(that's why I set epg timeout to 0)

maybe there should be a way to start a scan manually (otherwise vdr 
cannot tell if you're watching tv or not), but limited to the current 
source.
Also, I don't know if it's useful for the epg or not (probably not) but 
the channelscan/actuator plugins can be used to scan for new/modified 
channels.
