I did two things trying to get rid of this problem:

1) Installed the latest CVS DVB drivers under the SuSE kernel.
    No effect. Problem kept occuring frequently.

2) Installed vanilla kernel 2.6.11.7 from kernel.org.
    Problem did not reoccur ever since.
    (I installed the kernel 22 hours ago. No occurence
     of the problem since then. With the SuSE kernel
     the longest gap between two crashes was 4 hours)

So, at least for my configuration, I believe to have prove that

a) the SuSE kernel is faulty.
b) the problem lies *not* directly in the SuSE kernel's DVB drivers.
