 Applied with small changes:

    - add .version and .tarball-version to top-level Makefile.am
    - remove check-news from AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE (I need usable "make
      distcheck" on dirty git repository).


 Note that gnulib calls autoreconf if a version from git-version-gen does 
 not match with $(VERSION) and a dist-* target is requested.
 
 I don't think this is an ideal solution, it would be better to somewhere
 store the latest git tag (.last-version-tag) and check in the top-level
 Makefile.am if the latest tag is still the same. If there is a new
 tag then call autoreconf. Volunteers? :-)
