fdisk unable to re-read partition table (v2.14)

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

Hi, I've noticed on several desktops and laptops that fdisk fails to
re-read the partition table. Is anyone looking into this? I've seen it
over the last 2 years, latest version I have seen it in is v2.14 on an
Ubuntu live disc, 8.04. Makes it a big of a pain, as I'd like to
partition and install as the same step. None of hte drives are in use,
and none are mounted or being accessed by anything else, its a
straight booted Ubuntu live disc, and then the drives are plugged in,
and unmounted so I can modify them.

my only other feedback is the list majordomo takes 4 emails to
subscribe me to this list, and its not mentioned in any of those 4
emails that the address to post is util-linux-ng@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Unless I've missed it in the "fog", in which case perhaps it can be
made clear :)

root@ubuntu:/dev# fdisk sdb

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 38913.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
