any thoughts on how to autodetect this nicely in configure ?  or perhaps leave 
it up to the package maintainers ?

AC_ARG_ENABLE([ncursesw],[...],enable_ncursesw=$enableval,enable_ncursesw=no)
this would default to never using the wide ncurses unless the package 
maintainer said --enable-ncursesw ...
