Prescribed burns scheduled this week
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., Nov. 13, 2018, For Immediate Release —
Fire managers will be conducting prescribed burns near Flagstaff this week, beginning today, in strategic areas to help reduce the risk of severe wildfires around communities and important infrastructure. Today (Nov. 13) The 295-acre Mountainaire project will begin this morning just south of the Mountainaire community,
which will help protect that community from wildfires that could begin in areas southwest of Mountainaire. Smoke will impact surrounding communities, motorists along Interstate 17 in the Mountainaire and Kachina Village area, and it is expected to disperse
in a southerly direction. Smoke may settle in low-lying areas during the evening hours and reduce visibility on I-17.
Thursday (Nov. 15) Fire managers are planning to ignite the Horseshoe project on Thursday, a 700-acre area 13 miles northeast
of Flagstaff immediately west of U.S. Highway 89. According to current wind direction predictions, smoke is expected to disperse in a westerly direction and impact the Timberline community, Kendrick Park, and City of Flagstaff. Smoke may settle in low lying
areas during the evening hours and may reduce visibility on U.S. Highway 89. The public and media can get notifications of prescribed burns or any other activity happening on the

why smoke is in the air and where it is coming from. Coconino National Forest works closely with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to monitor smoke impacts. Individuals
