Memorial Day visitors flock to Coconino NF

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., June 1, 2018, For Immediate Release — Coconino National Forest was a busy place over Memorial Day weekend, with visitors filling developed campsites early and dealing with areas closed due to very high fire danger.

Extra Forest Service patrols were dispatched over the holiday weekend to greet visitors, remind campers of the restrictions, and help inform people about the areas still open for dispersed camping.

Campers and crowds of people filled developed campsites to capacity on Thursday (May 24), while others dispersed throughout the forest over the weekend to camping spots in areas still open to the public. However, there were those who still did not heed Stage 2 Fire Restrictions or stay out of areas closed due to fire danger.

Additionally, Forest Service patrols encountered tons of trash left throughout the forest among dispersed camping sites, even near signs that state there is no trash service and visitors must take all of their trash with them.

The following is a summary of known violations during Memorial Day weekend (May 25-28):

·        Citations: 42

·        Warnings: 16

·        Closure Violations: 18

·        Illegal Campfires: 15

Coconino National Forest remains in Stage 2 Fire Restrictions for all areas that are not closed due to fire danger. For the information on fire restrictions and closures see www.coconinonationalforest.us.

People who witness a violation of restrictions and/or closure areas can report those violations to the Coconino Fire Dispatch Center at (928) 527-3552.
