Fireside Lecture on February 9 features an Alpine Tsunami

JUNEAU, Alaska, Feb. 7, 2018 – The U.S. Forest Service announces the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center Fireside Chat on February 9, 2018 highlighting an alpine tsunami which occurred on the Héen Latinee Experimental Forest.

Did you feel the ground shake on Dec. 30, 2016? Héen Latinee Experimental Forest Lead Scientist Rick Edwards describes a glacial rockslide that plunged into an alpine lake in 2016. It released a 30 foot wave that scoured a 300 foot wide swath through the valley below. Data collected before the wave along with before and after imagery allows researchers to assess the extent of damage caused by the flood. Join us at the visitor center to discover the effects of this land-shaking event.

The Friday night Fireside Lecture begins at 6:30 p.m. and repeats at 8 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Fireside Lectures and Visitor Center entrance are free of charge in the winter. Winter hours are Fridays, Saturday, and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Discovery Southeast bookstore inside the center will be open during the same hours as the visitor center, including Friday nights for lectures. The nonprofit bookstore and the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center are partnering to encourage local authors and artists to present their products for visitors.
