Fireside Lecture on January 19 features Treadwell Mine

JUNEAU, Alaska, Jan. 16, 2018 – The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center’s second Fireside Lecture of the season, occurring this Friday, January 19, will feature the exciting history of the Treadwell Mine that ended with a dramatic cave-in.

Paulette Simpson and Wayne Jensen of the Treadwell Historic Preservation Society will show you why in 1881, investors sent John Treadwell north from San Francisco to purchase claims on Douglas Island. Eventually those claims would result in a solid rock mine that reached 2300 feet below sea level, yielding $66 million dollars of gold, the largest gold mine in the world.

Doors open for the Friday night lectures at 6 p.m. The Forest Service also invites people to come inside the visitor center free of charge during winter on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Discovery Southeast bookstore inside the center will be open during the same hours as the visitor center, including Friday nights for lectures. The nonprofit bookstore and the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center are partnering to encourage local authors and artists to present their products for visitors.
