Prescribed burns planned for this week on Coconino NF
Flagstaff, Ariz., Oct. 30, 2017, For Immediate Release —
Two prescribed burn projects are planned this week on the Coconino National Forest, which will include the Flagstaff and Mogollon Rim ranger
districts.
Favorable weather and ventilation is forecasted during daytime hours, with winds predicted to transport and disperse
smoke toward the northeast.
Prescribed burns are always
dependent upon weather and wind conditions, which can differ drastically across the forest. Prescribed burns are also subject to approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental
Quality, so all or some of these burns could be canceled if conditions are not suitable.
FLAGSTAFF RANGER DISTRICT.
Horseshoe Project
When:
Planned ignition will be Wednesday at about 9 a.m. The estimated duration of this project is two to three days (Nov.1-3).
Where: The burn area is approximately three miles east of Kendrick Park, north of the San Francisco Peaks. (35°25'36.4"N
111°41'03.3"W)
Size:
Approximately 2,400 acres.
Closures/Restrictions:
None.
Smoke Impacts:
Smoke impacts are possible in areas such as Snowbowl Estates, U.S. Highway 180 and state Route 89A, as well as the communities of Cameron, Tuba
City and the Little Colorado River Valley.
MOGOLLON RIM RANGER DISTRICT.
Sawmill Project
When:
Ignitions for the Sawmill Project begin Wednesday evening (Nov. 1) at approximately 6 p.m. The estimated duration of this project is one
day.
Where: The burn area is seven miles southeast of Mormon Lake, east of Lake Mary Road, using Forest Roads 638, 124H, 92C, local topography and FR 6045 as boundaries. (34°49'05.6"N,

Size:
750 acres.
Closures/Restrictions:
None.
Smoke Impacts:
Smoke is predicted to move toward the east/northeast and may impact local communities such as Mormon Lake Village and motorists on Lake Mary
Road. Cooling temperatures in the evenings may cause smoke to settle in the Happy Jack area and drain down nearby canyons.
