Open Houses for Heli-ski Operations

on the Seward and Glacier Ranger Districts – Chugach National Forest

Anchorage, October 16, 2017 – The Chugach National Forest will hold three community public meetings to discuss future heli-ski operations for the Glacier and Seward Ranger Districts.

·         Girdwood - October 23 at 7:00pm, Girdwood Community Center

·         Moose Pass - October 25 at 6:00pm, Moose Pass Community Hall

·         Seward - October 26, at 6:00pm at Seward Library

The meetings will be an open house format and we will be sharing information and soliciting comments on the following actions:

The Glacier Ranger District is renewing the Chugach Powder Guides 10-year priority use permit for helicopter supported recreation on the Kenai Peninsula and is seeking the public’s input to:

1.      Identify any changed environmental circumstances that need to be considered prior to renewal.

2.      Validate the effectiveness of the terms and conditions in the permit intended to minimize recreation user conflicts, and identify any changes to be considered prior to renewal.

The Seward Ranger District is considering the authorization of one temporary use permit for heli-skiing to continue implementation of the 2004 Commercially Guided Helicopter Skiing on the Kenai Peninsula Record of Decision (ROD) for Mount Ascension and East Ptarmigan.  The Seward Ranger District is seeking the public’s input to:

1.      Highlight our understanding about current winter recreation use patterns within the Mount Ascension/East Ptarmigan area;

2.      Identify changes in potential user conflicts since 2004 within the Mount Ascension/East Ptarmigan area;

3.      Identify operational standards that could be implemented in addition to the mitigation measures outlined in the ROD; i.e. noise disturbance monitoring;

4.      Learn what is important to the communities surrounding the Seward Ranger District to monitor/track to help inform a decision related to heli-skiing in the future; and

5.      Identify what success would look like to the communities as we continue to seek heli-skiing opportunities in Mount Ascension and East Ptarmigan.

If you are not able to attend an open house, would like more information on the proposals, or would like to provide comment, please submit an email to cnfheli@xxxxxxxxx. More information can be found at:
