SITKA, Alaska, Mar. 27, 2017 – The Sitka Ranger District is hosting an open house April 12, 2017, to receive public comments regarding outfitter-guide permits for non-motorized, land-based activities originating from interior Baranof Island
lakes by fixed-wing aircraft. The event builds on previous public discussions regarding outfitter use of U.S. Forest Service recreation cabins and activities at lakes on Baranof Island. Requests from previous public discussion included a capacity analysis of potential
resource and social issues at the lakes, which could limit capacity for permits and activities. In discussions with local pilots on landing and takeoff concerns, we have identified approximately 30 lakes for consideration, though others could be included depending
on future input. At the open house, Forest Service staff will give a brief presentation on the project. Attendees will have an opportunity to view maps and provide comments on the lakes, including input based on personal experience and concerns. This input
will assist with the preparation of the capacity analysis, which would then inform an environmental analysis in the future.
The meeting will be held at 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm, in the Sitka Ranger District Office (2108 Halibut Point Road, Sitka).
