Construction on Mt. Elden lookout tower restricts visitation
Flagstaff, Ariz., Oct. 19, 2016, For Immediate Release —
The fire lookout tower on Mt. Elden is receiving a full reconstruction which means visitors will not be allowed on the tower during construction in order to keep the public
and workers safe. The repair is scheduled to begin Monday (Oct. 24) and is estimated to be complete by April 30, 2017.
Years of exposure to the harsh elements have caused wear which now needs attention. The tower, originally constructed in 1977, is subjected to high winds, strong rain and snow storms which have weathered the exterior of the cabin. In addition to the outside,
the interior will be upgraded to remove the years of use from lookouts and visitors inside the cab.
Lookout towers are an important part of keeping the forest safe. The Mt. Elden lookout is critical in spotting, cross checking and reporting nearly half of the fires in the Coconino
National Forest. This crucial tower is a safety measure for the Flagstaff and forest urban interface.
Visiting the tower from the top of Elden Lookout Trail, Sunset Trail, Oldham Trail, and Elden Lookout Road is a popular summertime activity. The tower is only open to visitors when
it is staffed during fire season (early May through late September).
