Labor Fire benefits area northwest of Jacob Lake

Fredonia, Ariz., Sept. 6, 2016 — For Immediate Release. On Sept. 5, North Zone firefighters discovered the Labor Fire approximately 3.5 miles northwest of Jacob Lake. Due to recent precipitation, this lightning-caused wildfire is slowly growing within the ponderosa pine vegetation located within the Jacob-Ryan Vegetation Management project area.

Fire managers intend to manage the wildfire within a 430-acre planning area for multiple objectives including reducing accumulated forest litter and fuels, improving wildlife habitat, protecting cultural resources, and increasing firefighter and visitor safety.

Smoke impacts are anticipated to be minimal along Highway 89A. Pending favorable weather conditions, fire managers plan to prep key areas as the fire spreads naturally. Varying winds are expected tomorrow from south to north as moisture from Hurricane Newton moves in. Chances for showers and storms are forecasted to increase Thursday and Friday with west southwest winds at 5 to 15 mph.

Date/Time Reported: Monday, Sept. 5, 2016

Location: 19.5 miles southeast of Fredonia

Cause: Lightning

Size: Approximately 20 acres and growing slowly

Fuel Type: Ponderosa Pine

Fire Behavior: Low intensity with 1-to-6 inch flame lengths

Light smoke is anticipated within the vicinity of Jacob Lake. For more information on how smoke can affect you, please visit www.phoenixvis.net/PPMmain.aspx.
