Sunflower and Ike fire update: Williams, Ariz., August 10, 2016—For Immediate Release.
The Sunflower fire on the Williams Ranger District of Kaibab National Forest has rekindled with an increase in activity over the past few days as a drying trend allowed for active spread. The Ike fire has been called out after receiving significant moisture
prior to the recent change in weather. The Sunflower Fire was approaching a designated management action point yesterday, prompting crews to initiate some precautionary hand ignitions in order to protect the values at risk including a powerline and securing a road. Fire behavior
was ideal with low to moderate intensity which permitted crews to accomplish the objectives without any holding concerns. Smoke was visible during the operation but dispersed quickly by late afternoon.
Start Date: July 20, 2016. Cause: Lightning. Location: West of Sunflower Flat and White Horse Lake close to the junction of forest roads 747 and 14. Current Size: Sunflower fire – approximately 500 acres. / Ike fire – out. Incident Commander: Cody Payne ICT4 / Kaleb Krogen ICT4T. Resources: One-11 person fuels crew, one-Type 3 engine, and two-Patrol units. Total personnel is 20. Current Status: Heavy rain has been forecasted to fall over the fire area today which will once again reduce activity considerably. This pattern is expected to continue as thunderstorms sporadically occur over the fire area.
