Kaibab National Forest plans to lift trail closures on Kaibab Plateau

Fredonia, Ariz., July 5, 2016 — For Immediate Release. The North Canyon and South Canyon trail closures associated with the Wildcat Fire on the North Kaibab Ranger District will be lifted tomorrow (Wednesday, July 6) at 8 a.m. due to decreased fire danger in the area.

The North Canyon trail closure, which was implemented on June 18 to provide for public and firefighter safety, started at Forest Road 631 and extended to the intersection of the Arizona Trail on the west side, approximately three-quarters of a mile from FR 611, and the South Canyon Trail closure started at FR 211 and extended to the west side trailhead near the junction of FR 610 and FR 2599.

When the trail closures are lifted, normal activities such as camping and hiking will be permitted. Visitors on both trails should anticipate seeing firefighter activity in the area as firefighters will continue patrolling and monitoring the area. However since the district has not received the necessary amount of widespread precipitation required to lift campfire and smoking restrictions, also known as Stage 1 fire restrictions, these restrictions will remain in effect until forest managers have determined it is safe to lift them. A public notice will be released once the fire restrictions are rescinded.
