Attached is today’s news release, vicinity map and temporary North and South Canyon trail closure order for the Wildcat Fire on the North Kaibab Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest. Thank you! r/s David
June 19, 2016 Location: South of Hwy 89A, southwest of FR 8910 and 211 within the vicinity of Saddle Mountain
Wilderness. Size: Approximately 1,507-acres (reduced as a result of more accurate mapping).
Percent contained: 40%
Cause: Lightning Resources assigned: 297 personnel, which include engine crews, hand crews, air support, water tenders
and dozers. Management strategy: Full suppression. Summary:
Effective immediately, the North and South Canyon trails are temporarily closed in order to provide for
public and firefighter
safety. A public notice will be released once the closure is rescinded.
The North Canyon Trail closure will start at Forest Road (FR) 631 and extend to the intersection of the Arizona Trail on the west side, approximately 0.75 miles from FR611. The South Canyon Trail
closure will start at FR211 and extend to the west side trailhead near the junction of FR610 and FR2599. Yesterday excessive temperatures did effect fire personnel, two of which were treated for heat-related illnesses. Minimal fire activity was observed with no growth
in fire size. Crews successfully mopped up 100 feet in from the fire’s edge in several areas. In the wilderness, crews continue utilizing Minimal Impact Suppression Tactics to ensure fire control with a light hand on the land. Several hot spots still exist
within the fire perimeter. Relative humidity and fuel moisture remain very low, and potential for fire growth still exists. Strategies and tactics continue to include protection of values at risk where and when success does not compromise safety. These include but are not limited to: ·
North and South Canyon Watersheds
·
Saddle Mountain Wilderness ·
Cultural Resources
·
Kane Ranch ·
House Rock Head Quarters
·
Tater Pipeline ·
Apache Trout Habitat
·
Highway 89A ·
Big Ridge and South Canyon Repeaters
·
DeMotte Infrastructure Drivers are encouraged to continue to be cautious while driving through House Rock Valley on Arizona Highway 89A, in the vicinity of Jacob Lake and the junction of Arizona Highway 67 and
89A due to fire related traffic. As a reminder, camp fire and smoking fire restrictions remain in effect. To find out where fire restrictions are in effect in Arizona, visit
