Daily update for Jack wildfire on Coconino NF

Clints Well, Ariz., June 9, 2016, For Immediate Release — Operations on the Jack Fire are being conducted in conjunction with favorable weather conditions to limit smoke impacts on the public and firefighters. Winds are expected to be light and from the west, driving smoke toward the east and northeast.

Smoke from the Jack Fire will be visible in Winslow, Holbrook, along Interstate 17 and Lake Mary Road, as well as communities along these routes.  Winslow may experience a brief period of heavier concentrations of smoke in the late evening as temperatures cool.

Thunderstorms could pass over the fire area in the late afternoon. Downdrafts from thunderstorms may push smoke to the surface in the immediate vicinity of the active fire perimeter and create short-duration high concentration of smoke that will dissipate as thunderstorms pass.

Motorists and visitors are encouraged to drive cautiously along Lake Mary Road and state Route 87 due to smoke and heavy traffic from fire operations.

JACK FIRE OVERVIEW

Start Date: May 29, 2016

Cause: Lightning.

Location: About 14 miles north of Clints Well on the east side of Lake Mary Road, along Forest Roads 294 and 294C.

Current Size: Approximately 14,000 acres.

Resources: 4-Type 1 Crews, 7-engines, 1-Dozer, and various specialists, totaling 148 personnel.

Smoke: Smoke is visible from Lake Mary Road (FH 3) as well as the communities of Clints Well, Happy Jack, Payson, Pine, Strawberry, the Verde Valley, the Heber area, Joseph City, and Winslow.  Winds are expected to be light and from the west, driving smoke toward the east and northeast. Winslow may experience a brief period of heavier concentrations in the late evening as temperatures cool.  Thunderstorms could pass over the fire area in the late afternoon.    Downdrafts from thunderstorms may push smoke to the surface in the immediate vicinity of the active fire perimeter and create short-duration high concentration of smoke that will dissipate as thunderstorms pass.  Effected communities include Happy Jack, Clear Creek Pines, Starlight Pines, Pine Canyon Estates, Ponderosa Pines, Mogollon Ranches, the Verde Valley, the Heber area, Winslow, and Joseph City. The Forest Service has placed a temporary smoke monitor at the town of Snowflake, near Holbrook, to evaluate local conditions.  Telescope operations at the Discovery Channel Telescope (near Happy Jack) may be suspended periodically in order to protect the telescope lens from minute scratching from smoke.  Contact the Telescope directly for further information.

Closures: There is currently a Temporary Flight Restriction in place over the fire area.  Area closures are in effect. Currently the closure (Order #04-16-10-F) is bounded by Coconino Highway 3 and Forest Roads (FR):  FH-3, FR 135, FR 124H, FR 124J, FR, 82B, FR 82, FR 211. The closure applies only to National Forest System lands within the closure area.  FH-3, FR 135, FR 124H, FR 124J, FR, 82B, FR 82, FR 211 are open for public travel, although public travel is discouraged given the presence of fire traffic. Motorists in the area of the fire are encouraged to slow down, as firefighters and equipment will be working in the area.  The Happy Jack segment of the Arizona National Scenic Trail is included in the closed area, and has been rerouted. To view the Closure Order and map of the fire closure area, visit: http://tinyurl.com/cof-orders.

Recent & Current Operations: Fire behavior remains active. Objectives—including protection of private inholdings, natural and cultural resources, public and Forest values, local communities and the Western Area Power Administration powerline, as well as fuel reduction and nutrient recycling—continue to be successful. Today crews will evaluate fire effects, prepare range improvements and infrastructure, patrol holding and control features, and protect the powerline.

Firefighters often aid fire progression in areas in order to protect public values and forest health. Due to changes in weather and predicted fire behavior, operations will be minimal during the day and increase in the afternoon and evening. Operations are being conducted in conjunction with favorable weather conditions to limit smoke impacts on the public and firefighters. Expect to see smoke from as far away as Winslow – approximately 65 miles to the northwest—Flagstaff, along I-17, I-40, State Route 87 and Forest Highway 3.
