Applications invited for Ketchikan-Misty Fiords Ranger District Youth Conservation Corps

KETCHIKAN, Alaska–The Ketchikan-Misty Fiords Ranger District will host a six person Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) crew during the summer of 2016. YCC is a summer employment program for young men and women ages 15 through 18.

“The program emphasis will on multiple use management,” said Fish Wildlife Watershed Botany Staff Officer Jon Hyde. “During their six week tour, the YCC crew will work with the district fisheries, recreation, and timber program areas to provide project assistance.” Crew members will assist with:

·        maintaining a remote fish ladder and setting up associated monitoring equipment;

·        field surveys associated with a large watershed restoration project;

·        timber stand reconnaissance, using orienteering, tree measurements, and estimations for logging system roads;

·        campground maintenance at the Ward Lake Campground;

·        trail maintenance in the remote Misty-Fiords Wilderness;

·        staffing the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center in downtown Ketchikan.

Applications are accepted from March 1 to April 1. To apply, go to http://www.fs.fed.us/sites/default/files/media/2015/14/fillable-ycc-application.pdf. The six-week employment time is June 13 to July 22. Housing will be available for non-resident participants. Applicants need to be prepared for hard physical work in an outdoor environment under potential adverse weather conditions and rough terrain. Corps members should be prepared to enjoy working in North America’s largest temperate rainforest–wet weather is the norm, not the exception.

“YCC recruiting information will be available at the Ketchikan-Misty Fiords Ranger District table at the Ketchikan Job Fair,” said Support Services Supervisor Diane Olson. The fair is March 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Plaza Mall, 2417 Tongass Ave in Ketchikan.
