FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., Sep. 30, 2015 — For Immediate Release.
The Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest is seeking public comment on the proposed installation of a permanent vault toilet for public use at the Cathedral
Rock Trailhead.
A toilet, identical to the type currently located at Little Horse Trailhead, would be installed at an effective location to provide the public with sanitation services and protect
water quality in Oak Creek.
More than 80,000 visitors per year use the popular Cathedral Rock Trail, accessed from the Cathedral Rock Trailhead located on Back O’ Beyond Road in Sedona.
The unisex single vault toilet building will minimize the amount of unsightly and unsanitary toilet paper and human waste frequently visible on the ground near the trailhead. It
would also be colored to blend with the environment, and visually screened from the roadway by existing vegetation to the extent possible.
The toilet would be installed as soon as funding is available. Installation of the toilet would take approximately three days, and short-term environmental impacts may include
excavation of the vault hole, noise of installation, and potential traffic control while the toilet and vault are moved to the site along Back O’ Beyond Road, and lifted into place.
