Trail projects moving forward in Yakutat
YAKUTAT, Alaska–The Yakutat Ranger District (YRD) and City and Borough of Yakutat recently received a grant for much-needed trail maintenance.
As part of the planned trail construction on YRD lands, the Rasmuson Foundation awarded $25,000 in July to fund the construction of a parking lot for a trail near Lower Tawah Creek. This project will reduce erosion and improve water quality, and draw the public
away from private property. This grant complements an additional $40,000 by Alaska Department of Fish and Game to cover crew time and materials.
These projects will enable a planned AmeriCorps National Civilian Conservation Corps team next summer to do vital trail restoration, construction, park cleanups, interpretation/outreach, and other projects that will benefit the community of Yakutat and the
Ranger District., Additional recreational opportunities for the community and visitors will provide safe recreational opportunities outdoors in the Yakutat Forelands.
Yakutat and other Districts on the Tongass are moving towards engaging local and national youth and young adults in managing the natural resources and recreational areas on this great forest. In small communities, like Yakutat, creating a good working relationship
between local peoples and groups, and federal land agencies, creates a very positive image of the value the Department of Agriculture and Forest Service contribute to this country’s national lands.
