Heavy rains force closure of Sandy Beach Road to Coffman Cove on POW

THORNE BAY, Alaska – Three days of torrential rainfall drenched Thorne Bay on Prince of Wales Island resulting in the indefinite closure of Sandy Beach Road to Coffman Cove above Hatchery Y (Forest Road 30 and 3030 junction).

“Six inches of pounding rains during the past three days caused significant road damage,” said Thorne Bay District Ranger Rachelle Huddleston-Lorton. “I drove the Sandy Beach road and associated smaller roads Sunday to survey for damage. The closure is located about one mile north of the junction and four miles south of the turn to Luck Lake.”

People driving to Eagle Creek will need to get there by traveling from the Coffman Cove side of the 3030 road.

“We are currently assessing storm damage to roads, including washouts and downed trees,” Huddleston-Lorton added. “Please use extreme caution when traveling on forest roads.”

To report any road issues on the island, call the Thorne Bay Ranger District at 907-828-3304.
