Final Decision for Two
Recreation
Projects
JUNEAU, Alaska–The Juneau
Ranger District
is moving
forward with
two planned recreation
projects: the
West Glacier
Spur Road
Enhancement project,
and the
Lena Beach Recreation
Area Renovation project. These improvements should make both the West Glacier and Lena Beach Recreation Areas more accessible, safe, and enjoyable for all visitors.
On the
Lena Beach
project, the
District Ranger
decided to
change the
road through
the Lena Beach
Recreation Area
to a
one-way road;
pave the
road and
parking areas,
paint diagonal parking
lines and
add parking;
install a
curb and
speed bumps;
install bollards
(removable) gates for
emergency and
administrative needs;
reconstruct and
slightly move
the shelters
to improve accessibility;
replace six
outhouses in
three locations
with three,
fully accessible
outhouses; improve trails;
and make
other improvements.
On the West Glacier project, the District Ranger decided to construct and adjust parking; install a gate for emergency and administrative needs; construct a bike and pedestrian trail and install bike racks; adjust the Tolch Rock Trail to allow for skier access;
install a six-unit vault outhouse; construct a spur trail to Mendenhall Lake; install signs; and move the toilets to meet distance and elevation requirements and recommendations of the State while also making the toilets more accessible and avoiding the historic
shoothouse area.
Survey and design for these projects is in progress, and contract packages will be prepared this fall. Construction may begin as early as the spring of 2016.
The Tongass National Forest and Juneau Ranger District wish to thank Juneau residents for participating in the public meetings and providing comments on plans over the last year. For more information about these projects, contact Michelle Putz by phone at 907-747-4278
