Camillo fire update

Flagstaff, Ariz., June 27, 2015, For Immediate Release — The managed Camillo fire continues to meet fire managers’ objectives by re-introducing fire into the ecosystem with low to moderate fire effects. Crews have worked successfully to keep historical sites and highway infrastructure from being damaged. Burning along the high voltage kV power lines is complete with no adverse effects or interruptions in service. Private property within the fire management area is being protected from fire impacts and residents are still allowed to access their property safely. Safety is always a top priority; there have been no injuries to firefighters or the public to date.

CAMILLO FIRE OVERVIEW
Start Date:
June 14, 2015
Location:
20 miles south of Flagstaff, just southeast of Mormon Lake.

Current Size: 21,584 acres

Cause:
Natural (Lightning). This fire was started by lightning, and managing it allows the fire to fulfill its natural and crucial role in the ecosystem. The forest needs frequent, low severity fire to restore wildlife habitat, promote healthy vegetation, reduce fuels and the risk of severe fire, and create safer conditions for residents, visitors, and firefighters.

Operations Today: Fire personnel completed low intensity ignitions along the kV power lines yesterday allowing for firing operations to continue east of the power lines today off of FRs 9359F and 9363B. Crews will monitor and patrol areas along the management area boundary including FH 3 (Lake Mary Road).

Smoke: Expected winds today will push smoke to the east/northeast during daytime hours. The National Weather Service is predicting good ventilation today, meaning smoke should rise high above the fire and have less impact to communities overnight. Smoke in the immediate area of the fire will be the densest in the early morning and late evening hours, and motorists are urged to drive with caution.

Closures: The southern boundary of the closure area has been extended to FR 135, which is closed to the public. Residents of the Mahan Park subdivision who regularly use FR 135 from Lake Mary Road may use the alternate route of FR 294 off Lake Mary Road and the section of FR 135 that accesses their subdivision. Other closures include lands, roads, and trails in the vicinity of Little Mormon Mountain. This includes Forest Roads 92, 124, and a portion of 82. The area on the south side of FR 125 will be closed, but lands north of the road as well as FR 125 itself will remain open with access to Kinnikinick Lake. The Gooseberry Springs Trailhead and a portion of the Arizona Trail are also closed. See the full closure order and map on Inciweb. Delays are possible along FR 125 and Lake Mary Road because of fire personnel, smoke and equipment in the area.
