The Fifth Annual Yakutat Tern Festival

YAKUTAT, Alaska–The Fifth Annual Yakutat Tern Festival is May 28 to 31, 2015. The festival is a celebration of the natural and cultural resources of Yakutat, Alaska. Yakutat hosts one of the largest and southernmost known nesting colonies of Aleutian Terns, as well as Arctic Terns and up to 200 other bird species that nest in, or migrate through the area. The festival is family friendly and offers activities for birders as well as non-birders, including field trips, seminars, activities for children, evening banquets, bird banding demonstration, an art exhibit, and other programs.

This year's keynote speaker is John Marzluff. He is a professor of wildlife science at the University of Washington and author of In the Company of Crows and Ravens.

Forest Service employees are leading field trips, youth activities, and making presentations.

·       Learn about the birds of the Tongass National Forest from Wildlife Biologist Brian Logan. This seminar will focus on the birds found in Yakutat as well as the status of songbird monitoring throughout the Tongass National Forest.

·       Observe licensed bird bander Gwen Baluss demonstrating the use of mist nets to capture, band, and safely release songbirds.

·       View the travels of Alaska’s breeding birds through a series of color photos and maps. The Forest Service International Program’s Migratory Species Coordinator Greg Butcher will discuss conservation actions that can be taken to keep birds safe throughout the year.

·       Join Regional Land Management Planner Mike Goldstein in exploring the unique timing and migration of Aleutian Terns as they travel across the world. Goldstein will show winter hot spots and discuss why terns may be selecting these sites.
