Celebrate Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month with the Red Rock Ranger District
Flagstaff, AZ, Mar 5, 2015 — For Immediate Release. The public is invited to join the Red Rock Ranger
District at several fun and educational public events in March to celebrate Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month. Festivities begin tomorrow and continue over the next several weekends.
Friday, March 6 – 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ANCIENT TECHNOLOGIES:
See demonstrations of ancient technology including fire by friction, bow and arrow fabrication, and gourd art.
Location: Red Rock Ranger District Visitor Center
Saturday and Sunday, March 14 and 15 – 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. LIVING MOUNTAIN MAN CAMP:
Learn about the early American west from members of the Arizona Powderhorn Clan and Les Miserables Primitives. In the Mountain Man Camp visitors can step into time to experience the lifestyle
of a frontiersman in the early 1800’s. See demonstrations of natural methods for tanning animal hides and learn about the local wildlife. Location: V Bar V Heritage Site Saturday and Sunday March 21 and 22 – 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. V BAR V ARCHAEOLOGY DISCOVERY DAYS: Discover how the people of the past thrived
in this region for thousands of years. See ancient methods of making pottery, see how to make fire by friction, and learn how the plants in the area were used for food, fiber and medicine. Visitors can take part in target practice with “rabbit sticks” and
atl-atls, make pottery, grind corn on a metate, and taste traditional foods. Learn about ancient trade routes from Coconino National Forest Archaeologists Peter Pilles and Travis Bone. From 1-2 p.m. both days, learn about the Spring Equinox effect from author
and archaeo-astronomer Ken Zoll.
