Visitors reminded to prepare for winter conditions around Flagstaff, Blue Ridge, and Sedona
Flagstaff, AZ, Feb 27, 2015 — For Immediate Release. With more winter weather in the forecast, Coconino
National Forest managers wish to remind visitors to be prepared for winter conditions across the Forest.
Visitors coming to the Forest are urged to make smart decisions, put safety first, and be respectful of the land and other visitors.
Around Flagstaff and Blue Ridge:
In the high country, forest roads on the Flagstaff and Mogollon Rim Ranger Districts remain closed. Wing Mountain Road – Forest Road 222B – north
of Flagstaff is also closed, and the concessionaire at Wing Mountain Snowplay Area is no longer operating this season. The Crowley Pit parking area further north off Hwy 180 will be plowed, however there are no toilets or trash services – plan ahead and be
sure to take all trash with you when you leave. Current road status and winter recreation information can be found on our website at
www.coconinonationalforest.us, and a helpful map of snowplay opportunities around Flagstaff can be found online from our partners with the Flagstaff Convention
and Visitors Bureau: www.flagstaffarizona.org/winter-recreation/snowplay-map/
Around Sedona:
Even in the lower elevations of the Red Rock Ranger District, precipitation will likely warrant the closure of many
forest roads throughout the District, which will mean popular areas may also be inaccessible.
In addition, forest visitors should avoid using muddy trails; doing so can cause extensive, long-term damage to the trails.
Be prepared for the potential for flooding in rivers, streams, and drainages throughout the District, especially in Oak Creek Canyon
which is still recovering from last year’s Slide Fire. For updated conditions, and suggestions for alternate recreation opportunities around the Red Rock Ranger District, visitors should
call the District Visitor Center at 928-203-2900, open 9 am to 4:30 pm 7 days a week.
