Tongass Advisory Committee meets in Juneau

JUNEAU, Alaska–The sixth meeting of the Tongass Advisory Committee (TAC) is Feb. 17-19, 2015 at the Extended Stay America Hotel, 1800 Shell Simmons Drive, in Juneau, Alaska.

The February meeting was originally slated for Petersburg, but was moved to Juneau in order to provide participation by a full quorum of TAC members. While the committee regrets that it will not have the ability to visit Petersburg as originally planned, the TAC encourages community members and other members of the public to participate through the public comment process.

In an effort to continue ensuring a full quorum of committee members and to allow for adequate meeting time the March TAC meeting may be held in either Juneau or Ketchikan. The Forest Service will announce specific dates, times and locations of future meetings in the federal register and Alaska media outlets.

The primary focus of the February meeting in Juneau will be refining a recommendation for the Tongass Land and Resource Management Plan (Forest Plan) Amendment with emphasis on young-growth timber management.

The Committee encourages members of the public to provide input to the process through oral and/or written comment. Every TAC meeting includes a public comment period. Those interested in providing comment orally can register at the meeting. You may also submit written comments at the meeting, or send comments to Jason Anderson, Designated Federal Officer, Tongass National Forest, P.O. Box 309, Petersburg, Alaska 99833; by email to jasonanderson@xxxxxxxxx, or via facsimile to 907-772-5895. All comments, including names and addresses when provided, are placed in the record and available for public inspection and copying

TAC members advise and give recommendations to the Secretary of Agriculture through the Chief of the U.S. Forest Service. The membership represents a broad and diverse range of viewpoints and expertise, geographically diverse communities in and outside of Alaska, and people with a demonstrated commitment to working on collaborative solutions.

The official public notice of the Juneau TAC meeting was delayed slightly, but was published in the Federal Register on Feb. 11, 2015.
