North Zone Fire Managers Plan For Pile Burn Near Stina Point

FREDONIA, Ariz. – With the onset of winter weather, North Zone fire managers are transitioning from large-scale broadcast burning operations to smaller-sized slash pile burning operations at multiple locations throughout the North Kaibab Ranger District. Pending favorable weather and fuel moisture conditions, crews will return to Stina Point and continue the pile-burn treatments as early as Monday.

The piles consist primarily of small diameter tree trunks, small branches, twigs and needles. The goal of the pile burning is to remove fuels within the forest, lessening potential future wildland fire events while simultaneously improving soils.

Forest users and the public should be aware that smoke may be visible from certain areas of the forest; however, smoke impacts to the community are expected to be minimal. Over the last 12 weeks, North Zone fire managers successfully treated several thousand acres with prescribed fire.

All prescribed burning on the Kaibab National Forest is subject to approval by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and appropriate weather conditions.
