Alaska Regional Forester Announces New Deputy Regional Forester

JUNEAU, Alaska, May 23, 2014 – Alaska Regional Forester Beth Pendleton announced that new Deputy Regional Forester Rebecca (Becky) Nourse will report on July 28, replacing Ruth Monahan who retired in early May after a 35-year career with the U.S. Forest Service.

Nourse comes to the region from the U.S. Forest Service’s Intermountain Region, and is based in Idaho as the Forest Supervisor for the Sawtooth National Forest in Twin Falls.

“I am delighted to have Becky return to Alaska as the Deputy Regional Forester,” stated Pendleton. “Becky is well-versed in the Alaska issues and lifestyle, having spent fourteen years of her career in various positions on both the Tongass and Chugach National Forests. She brings a wide range of experience and leadership to this position with a great foundation in collaboration and building partnerships.”

Nourse is currently serving as Acting Deputy Regional Forester for the Intermountain Region in Ogden, Utah. As the Sawtooth Forest Supervisor in south-central Idaho and Utah, she oversaw three ranger districts and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area for three and a half years, managing a full suite of programs including administrative functions, range, recreation, fire, fish and wildlife, with a strong restoration focus for all activities.  Previously, she was the Acting Forest Supervisor on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in Sparks, Nevada, where she managed nine ranger districts and the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area.

Her career in Alaska is varied; she served as: Acting Deputy Regional Forester (2010), where she led an interagency effort to develop the Transition Framework to promote sustainable economic development in Southeast Alaska communities; Legislative Liaison for Alaska in Washington, DC (2008-2010); Acting Director of Recreation, Lands and Minerals (2005); Deputy Forest Supervisor, Tongass National Forest (2008-2010) implementing the Tongass Land Management Plan, workforce reorganization, and public policy issues; Acting Forest Supervisor, Chugach National Forest (2003-2004); and District Ranger for the Cordova Ranger District and Acting District Ranger for the Seward Ranger District on the Chugach National Forest.

“I’m very excited to be coming back to the Alaska Region and taking on the responsibilities as the Deputy Regional Forester,” stated Nourse.  “I welcome the numerous challenges and opportunities to serve the communities in Alaska.  In particular, I’m looking forward to reconnecting with employees, Alaska Native Tribes and organizations, partners, and those who love living and working in Alaska.”
