Tongass National Forest youth fishing events

KETCHIKAN, Alaska–The Tongass National Forest, partner agencies, groups, businesses, and local volunteers are sponsoring youth fishing events throughout Southeast Alaska. No experience is needed to participate in these events. It is a great way for children to learn how to fish or practice their fishing skills. Event planners will provide a wealth of experience and knowledge to help the beginning angler get started. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and all persons should bring proper footwear and clothing.

The Thorne Bay and Craig Ranger District’s 22nd Annual Kids Fishing Day Event is returning to Eagles Nest Campground (south of Control Lake) at Thorne Bay Ranger District on Saturday June 7 2014, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We will be celebrating National Boating Week, National Get Outdoors Day, and the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act. Power down, and unplug at home and head out with your curiosity to see what the USFS has in store. We encourage youth, elders, specialists and educators to go for an informative walk through the booths, activities, and demonstrations to the free BBQ and cotton candy tent. Turn in your rubber duck after visiting all the sites to earn lunch and prizes thanks to continued support from island wide “spawnsors”. Activities include the new aquatic ecology watershed stream simulation table, angler ethics, river safety, casting contest, fish printing (bring a T-shirt), fly tying and knot tying, fish ID/dissection, fish processing, boating safety, invasive species, Leave No Trace Recreation, fly fishing demonstrations, and casting instructions for all ages.
