PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND RESOURCE ADVISORY COMMITTEE

SEEKS PROJECT PROPOSALS BY APRIL 14, 2014

The Prince William Sound Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) is seeking applications for projects that will enhance forest ecosystems or restore and improve land health and water quality on the Chugach National Forest. There is approximately $500,000 remaining to spend on projects, and proposals will be accepted from any individual or organization. Proposals with multiple funding sources are particularly welcome. The deadline for submitting a proposal is April 14th.

The RAC is comprised of citizen advisors from communities across the Forest and works closely with the Forest Service to recommend projects. According to RAC Chairman Kristin Carpenter, “The RAC committee has already recommended over 2.5 million dollars’ worth of work to be conducted to benefit lands managed by the Chugach National Forest.”

The committee meets May 3, 2014, from 9 am – 5 pm at the Cordova Forest Service Office at 612 2nd Street to review and vote on the submitted proposals. The public is welcome to attend.

Past projects, such as Dusky nest island fabrication, Eyak Mountain trail maintenance, and invasive weed removal have benefited forest health, fish, wildlife, soils, watersheds and other resources. Click here for a complete list of projects.

Fifty percent of the total available funds must be used for road maintenance, decommissioning, or obliteration; or restoration of streams and watersheds. RAC projects must be located on National Forest System Lands of the Chugach National Forest (outside of the Anchorage and Kenai Peninsula boroughs) or on other nearby lands if the project will directly benefit resources on the national forest. Projects may be completed in a variety of ways, including by Forest Service personnel, through partnership agreements, or by open-bid contracting with individuals and corporations.

Funds are available to the Prince William Sound and surrounding areas through the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act.  This Act ensured that counties and boroughs across the country received funding for schools and roads, and investments in projects that enhance forest ecosystems.

The RAC Project Proposal form and instructions, as well as the proposal evaluation worksheet the RAC will use,  are available at all Forest Service offices in Cordova and Girdwood or on the PWS RAC website at:  https://fsplaces.fs.fed.us/fsfiles/unit/wo/secure_rural_schools.nsf. (Once on the site navigate to the Prince William Sound link and download the form).   All proposals are to be emailed directly to Nancy O’Brien at nobrien@xxxxxxxxx.

For more information on the Committee or to learn more about proposing projects, please contact RAC Coordinator Nancy O’Brien at (907) 424-4722.
