Wet, wild, wonderful Whales and Wilderness Festival weekend

CRAIG, Alaska– Come and take part in a wet, wild, wonderful weekend at the Whale and Wilderness Fest, March 28-30, 2014. Whale Fest has been an annual event on Prince of Wales Island for several years. This year, in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act, an extra event day is planned. The base for activities is the Craig High School Auditorium.

The first part of the festival focuses on the marine environment and the creatures that live in it. A guest speaker will discuss Orca behavior on Friday evening. A very popular Saturday event is a free whale-watching boat trip. Commercial fishermen and sport boats take guests out to see whales, herring, and all kinds of other marine animals and birds. It is quite a show—the ocean bursts with activity during the herring spawning cycle. Adventurous whale watchers of all ages and abilities may participate in a kayak tour. The kayak tour is part of the Out in the Rain program sponsored by the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council and the Forest Service. Enjoy another guest speaker Saturday evening, who will discuss the herring fishery.

On Sunday, March 30 2014, a trip to the Maurelle Islands Wilderness Area is scheduled. Trip participants will take part in a beach clean-up to remove marine debris. Afternoon activities take place at the Craig High School auditorium. A wilderness display, put together by Prince of Wales Island students, shows off excellent artwork, research, and science projects inspired by wilderness. A wilderness film, The Meaning of Wild will be shown at 2:00 p.m. The short film, developed by the Sitka Conservation Society, illustrates the beauty and diversity of Tongass National Forest Wilderness Areas.

The Forest Service is partnering with the Whale Fest Committee, the Beach Clean-up Crew, Southeast Alaska Conservation Council, and local Prince of Wales Island school districts to celebrate whales and wilderness.
