WILLIAMS, AZ – Each year the Forest Service hires thousands of temporary seasonal employees throughout the nation for challenging positions in several areas including fire, recreation, range, archeology and timber. At close to 1.6 million acres, there is plenty of land to manage and care for on the Kaibab National Forest (KNF). It's an awesome responsibility - but the rewards are as limitless as the views.
In wildland fire, seasonal openings include engine crew member, fuels crew, lookouts, prevention, and helitack. “An engine crew member may be igniting prescribed fire with a drip torch Monday, patrolling fireline for sparks and hot spots Tuesday, and taking a helicopter into the wilderness on a wildfire in Idaho on Friday” says Engine Captain, Ryan Rawlinson. A graduate of Flagstaff High School, Rawlinson started in 2003 as a summer hire. “I wanted to be a firefighter and also loved working hard in the outdoors- it was a perfect match” he adds.
