Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) and Alaska Mining and Diving Supply (AMDS) Donate New Ski-Doo Snowmobile to the Friends of the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center (CNFAIC) for 2013-14 winter season.

For the second year, BRP and AMDS have donated a new Ski-Doo Summit-SP snowmobile to support avalanche forecaster work in the backcountry. As a long-time supporter of the avalanche center, AMDS recommended the CNFAIC as a recipient of this program to benefit the entire backcountry community by promoting safe riding in avalanche terrain.

Avalanche assessment requires that forecasters travel deep into backcountry terrain to make snow stability observations. This generous contribution will assist CNFAIC forecasters in accessing remote areas to evaluate the snowpack in the mountains of Chugach National Forest.  The avalanche forecasts are then given to the public through advisories on www.cnfaic.org and through the avalanche hotline at 907-754-2369.

In addition, the snowmobile will be used during educational events to get forecasters into the backcountry with the public to teach avalanche safety protocols, hazard evaluation techniques, and companion rescue.  Educational opportunities will be held throughout the winter, free of charge to the public.  See www.cnfaic.org/blog/events for more information.

AMDS will be handing over the keys to CNFAIC Forecasters following a “Snowpack Assessment” presentation at 10:30 AM, Friday December 20th at the Turnagain Pass parking lot.  The public is welcome.

The CNFAIC would like to extend a huge thank you to Bombardier Recreational Products and Alaska Mining and Diving for offering this opportunity.
