Celebrate National Public Lands Day

KETCHIKAN, AK, September 20, 2013—National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is a nationwide event that promotes volunteerism, visitation, recreation, and education on public lands. In honor of the 20th anniversary, the Forest Service wants to make this the biggest NPLD volunteer event ever. The theme for this year’s event is “Helping Hands for America’s Lands.”

“On Saturday, September 28, 2013 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center will be open and free to the public,” said Leslie Swada, Southeast Alaska Discovery Center Program Director. “Since the center is within the city of Ketchikan, our work project will focus on the beautification of the center’s native plant gardens.”

The volunteer work project takes place from 10 a.m. to noon. Bring your gloves (and rain gear if needed), help clean up litter, and remove weeds from the gardens surrounding the center. Afterwards, enjoy a free barbeque.

“Education activities are planned for the afternoon,” added Swada. “Learn about public lands through activities such as a Leave No Trace Crime Scene, fish printing (bring a t-shirt) and a Trail-Mix Trivia Wheel game. Our local trails and the recently released Ketchikan Area Trails Guide will be showcased.” If it is raining, these activities will be moved inside.

The city parking lot in front of the Discovery Center will be closed from Friday, September 27 at noon through Saturday, September 28 at 5 p.m. This will insure the space is free of vehicles during the event and allows time to put up and take down the booths and clean up the parking lot afterwards.
