Mud Fire Now at 250 Acres

WILLIAMS, AZ – 10 miles south of Williams, the lightning ignited Mud Fire has grown to 250 acres in size. The fire perimeter is 40 percent active with new growth mainly to the southwest and east within the 7,700 acre planning area. Today, fire managers conducted 50 acres of managed ignitions along FS road 3209 in the Rocky Ridge area south of Summit Mountain. These ignitions, along the northern boundary of the 2009 Cross Fire, help ensure the Mud Fire perimeter does not spread outside of the planning area. Fire behavior today remained low intensity with 6-12 inch flame lengths. The Mud Fire planning area was developed with resource benefit to multiple objectives including maintaining a fire-adapted ecosystem and protecting cultural resources and wildlife habitat.

Date/Time Reported: Monday July 29th, 2013

Location: 10 miles south of Williams

Cause: Lightning

Size: 250 Acres

Landscape/Fuels: Ponderosa Pine and Oak

Fire Behavior: Low intensity

Planning Area: 7,700 acres

Smoke impacts should continue to be minimal to the Williams community though smoke is highly visible from town and adjacent portions of Interstate 40. However, varying monsoonal precipitation and winds may change fire behavior and growth resulting in increased smoke production. Hunters scouting for fall hunts and general forest visitors are asked to use caution in the general fire area, be aware of smoke, and observe all posted signs.
