Lightning starts Small Fires on Bill Williams Mountain

 

WILLIAMS, AZ – A strong storm cell ignited several small lightning fires across the Williams Ranger District including four small fires on Bill Williams Mountain. All fires are less than one tenth of an acre burning in dense forest in steep and rugged terrain. Smoke may be visible from Williams and adjacent portions of Interstate 40.  Crews are responding aggressively to these lightning caused fires with a full suppression strategy. US Forest Service resources are on scene at each fire.

 

Date/Time Reported: Thursday July 18

Location: Williams, AZ on Bill Williams Mountain

Cause: Lightning

Size: .10 Acre

Landscape/Fuels: Ponderosa Pine, Mixed Conifer, Brush in steep, rugged terrain

Fire Behavior: Smoldering with low growth potential

 

Smoke impacts should be minimal, if any, for the Williams area and surrounding communities as the forecast shows a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before midnight. Winds will be north northwest around 5 mph.
