FREDONIA, Ariz. – The North Kaibab Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest began selling personal use, dead fuelwood permits today.

The permits are available for purchase from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the North Kaibab Ranger District office, 430 S. Main St., Fredonia.  Permits can also be purchased by mail.  Permit requests and payments should be mailed to:

North Kaibab Ranger District

Attn:  Fuelwood Permits

PO Box 248

Fredonia, AZ 86022

Permits will be available intermittently at the Kaibab Plateau Visitor Center in Jacob Lake.  Please call in advance to the visitor center at (928) 643-7298 or to the district office at (928) 643-7395 to confirm the availability of wood permits at the visitor center.

Fuelwood is $5 per cord, with a four-cord minimum and a 10-cord maximum per household per year.  Tags will be issued in quarter-cord increments.  A map of authorized cutting areas and regulations will be issued with the permits.  Personal use, dead fuelwood cutting season will be open from today to Nov. 30, and the Highway 67 gate at Jacob Lake is scheduled to open May 15.

All visitors to the Kaibab National Forest are reminded to always be extremely careful with fire.  Fuelwood cutters should be aware that chainsaws can throw sparks and ignite grasses and brush.  Always carry a shovel and a fire extinguisher or water in case of a fire start.  Additionally, all chainsaws must be equipped with a stainless steel spark arrestor screen.
