FEDERAL SUBSISTENCE DOE SEASON CLOSED IN THE NORTHEAST CHICHAGOF CONTROLLED USE AREA OF UNIT 4

The Hoonah and Sitka District Rangers, under their authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, will close the female deer (doe) season in the Northeast Chichagof Controlled Use Area (NECCUA) effective 11:59 p.m., Thursday December 13, 2012 through the remainder of the Federal season which ends January 31, 2013.

The NECCUA consists of all portions of Unit 4 on Chichagof Island north of Tenakee Inlet and east of the drainage divide from the northwest point of Gull Cove to Port Frederick Portage, including all drainages into Port Frederick and Mud Bay. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) closed the State doe hunting season in the same area effective 11:59 p.m., Thursday October 25, 2012 for the remainder of the State season which ends December 31, 2012.

The 2012 deer season marked the first doe hunt in NECCUA since 2007. The doe seasons have been closed due to high mortality caused by harsh winter conditions which persisted for several years. Public hearings were held in Hoonah on July 20 and August 2, 2012 to discuss the possibility of State and Federal doe seasons in 2012. Based on information from these hearings and biological information from ADF&G, both the State and Federal doe seasons remained open for a limited doe harvest contingent on in-season harvest data.  In-season harvest data suggest that further doe harvest could be detrimental to the ongoing recovery of the deer population in the area.

The Federal subsistence deer season in the remainder of Unit 4 will remain open through January 31, 2013 unless closed by a future special action.

A map and description of the closed areas are available at the Hoonah Ranger District Office. For additional information, contact the Subsistence Biologist for Sitka/Hoonah Ranger Districts Justin Koller at 907-747-4297 or the Hoonah District Ranger Rich Jennings at 907-945-1201.
