Flagstaff Fire Department Prescribed Burns

To “Protect Values at Risk,” the Flagstaff Fire Department has several prescribed broadcast burns planned in the Flagstaff area as part of its Wildland Fire Management program.  The purpose of these burns is to improve forest health and reduce the risk of destructive wildfire by eliminating thick accumulations of pine needles and other forest debris.

Broadcast burns are planned for the following locations:

City Reservoir North                       NW corner of town                         26 acres

City Well Field                    5 Miles SW of town                         121 acres

Naval Observatory                          5 Miles W of town                           43 acres

Camp Navajo Army Depot           10 Miles west of town                   115 acres

Implementation of these burns is planned for the next two to three weeks dependent upon available staffing, appropriate weather conditions and approval by the AZ Dept. of Environmental Quality (ADEQ).  Ignitions will begin in the morning and should be completed by early afternoon.  A priority for these operations is to minimize smoke impacts to Flagstaff area residents.  Some smoke may be visible from these locations during the day and may extend into the evening or early morning hours.  Firefighters will continue to check these fires until they are declared out.
