Crews have begun ignition on the A-1 prescribed burn this morning. Expect smoke near Bellemont and Baderville; today’s winds will disperse it to the north/northeast. Overnight, smoke will settle similarly to last night - around Baderville and Bellemont. Fire managers anticipate continuing burning efforts in this area tomorrow and Thursday.

A-1 prescribed burn to continue Tuesday
Flagstaff, AZ – Crews completed ignition on all 150 acres of the A-1 Project approved for today. Smoke will continue to be noticeable throughout the afternoon, and will decrease as the as the day progresses. Residual smoke will be noticeable in Baderville and Bellemont overnight. Pending favorable conditions, fire managers are planning to burn another portion of the A-1 Project tomorrow.
A-1 Project: 175 acres west of Flagstaff at A-1 Mountain, north of I-40, southwest of Baderville, and northeast of Bellemont. Smoke will disperse to the northeast during the day. Overnight, smoke will is expected to settle around Baderville and Bellemont, and some light smoke may be noticeable on I-40 and Why 180. Fire managers anticipate continuing burning efforts in this project area for the remainder of the week.
All prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather – including winds and ventilation, and approval from the ADEQ (www.azdeq.gov).
Fire managers make every effort to minimize smoke impacts to the communities while continuing to address the critical need to reduce the risk of severe wildfires around those communities. Tactics to keep smoke impacts as minimal as possible include canceling approved burns when conditions aren’t favorable, finding alternative uses for the debris in slash piles, timing daytime ignitions to allow the majority of smoke time to disperse prior to settling overnight, and burning larger sections at a time when conditions are favorable to reduce the overall number of days smoke is in the area.
In addition, the Coconino National Forest coordinates prescribed fire plans with the partners of the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes state and local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the impact of smoke on the communities.
