Pile Burning Planned for

Williams Ranger District

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest fire managers are preparing to burn slash piles mid-week on the Williams Ranger District west of the Maine Consolidated School in Parks.

Pending favorable conditions and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approval, firefighters plan to ignite ten acres of piles early Wednesday morning. The project unit is approximately 15 miles east of Williams, north of I-40.

The forecast for Wednesday shows west winds and a chance of showers. Crews will implement, monitor, and patrol the pile burning to ensure it meets the goals and objectives outlined by managers.

Piles are made of stacked tree slash cut during thinning projects. Burning the piles returns important nutrients to the soil, completing fire’s regenerative cycle. The goals of thinning and pile burning include improving forest health and reducing fire hazard.
