Be Fire Safe Year Round

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Although it is still winter, spring is fast approaching, and it will not be long before campers start heading to the forest to recreate, which makes it a good time to remind the public about fire safety.

Patches of snow remain across the forest; however, there are areas where there is no snow cover and the vegetation is drying quickly. These conditions can contribute to fire spread if one starts – even in February – as observed recently on the Rabbit Fire.

As a reminder, never leave a fire unattended, avoid making a fire during the windy part of the day, and ensure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving the area.  Never leave coals smoldering. Always carry a shovel and water to stir and drown the fire until it is cold to the touch. When recreating on public lands, please enjoy your stay and be extremely careful with fire.
