Armstrong Fire Update

TUSAYAN, Ariz. – The lightning-caused Armstrong Fire has grown to 166 acres, 18 miles southeast of Tusayan, north of Red Horse Wash. Most of the growth is a result of management activities over the weekend.

Crews are working with the fire within a pre-determined 9,300-acre area to achieve resource objectives. Operations the past two days consisted of establishing fire in strategic places along the northern edge of the management area. These actions are meant to reduce accumulations of dead and down fuel and prevent the fire from making rapid runs as it continues its progression across the landscape. Approximately 35 personnel are working on the incident.

While the Armstrong is burning within Game Management Unit 9, the fire will affect only a portion of the unit.  Fire activity will fluctuate during the next few weeks depending on the weather, terrain, and fuels in the area. Forest visitors are advised to avoid camping in or near the fire. If you are traveling on the district, please use caution and watch for fire crews and equipment.

Smoke will be visible from areas across the district and along portions of Highway 64. Managers expect an increase in smoke production today. Fire lookouts will help monitor smoke production and dispersal from the top of Red Butte and Grandview.
