Fire on Tusayan Ranger District to be Managed for Resource Objectives

TUSAYAN, Ariz. – A lightning-caused fire discovered Aug. 20 on the Tusayan Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest is being managed to improve forest health and enhance wildlife habitat, as well as to return fire to its natural role in a fire-adapted ecosystem.

The Armstrong Fire, which is about a quarter acre in size, is located in the southeastern portion of the district south of Forest Road 320 and north of Red Horse Wash.  It is burning in ponderosa pine forest and pinyon-juniper woodlands.  The location of the Armstrong Fire is just south of an area burned by the Mudersbach Fire in 2005.  The Mudersbach Fire was also used to achieve resource objectives on the Tusayan Ranger District.

Boundaries have been established in which the Armstrong Fire will be managed over the coming weeks, if weather conditions permit.  The approximately 9,300-acre management area is bordered by Forest Road 320 on the north, 301 on the east, 319 on the west, and 305B on the south.  As long as resource objectives continue to be met, the Armstrong Fire will be managed within the planned area, and fire managers will take necessary actions to keep it within that area.

Smoke from the Armstrong Fire may be visible from state Highway 64.  While there are no closures associated with the fire, visitors to the area are encouraged to use caution as fire equipment and personnel will be present.
