Fuelwood Permits To Be Sold For Williams and Tusayan Districts

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – The Williams and Tusayan ranger districts of the Kaibab National Forest will begin selling fuelwood permits for the 2011 season on April 18, weather permitting.  Details about the kinds of permits available on each district are available on the Kaibab National Forest website at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/kaibab/fuelwood.

Permits for dead and down wood will be $5 per cord, while green fuelwood permits will be $10 per cord.  Each permit will require a minimum purchase of $20.  Permits will be sold in 2-cord increments, and a maximum of 6 cords (combined) will be sold to any one individual.  Free use permits will also be available.

While the planned start date of this year’s fuelwood season is April 18, that will be delayed if weather and soil conditions are such that resource damage could occur from motorized travel.

Changes to this year’s fuelwood program

All individuals obtaining fuelwood permits for the Williams and Tusayan ranger districts of the Kaibab National Forest need to be aware of upcoming changes to the fuelwood program.  The Travel Management Rule (TMR) is expected to be implemented on the Williams and Tusayan districts this summer.  TMR is a federal regulation that requires all national forests and grasslands to designate a system of roads, trails and areas for motorized use, and to prohibit all motor vehicle use off the designated system.

When TMR is officially implemented, free Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) will be made available to members of the public showing the roads, trails and areas open to motor vehicle use.

•        As of June 15, all fuelwood permit holders for the Williams Ranger District are asked to contact the district office to receive a copy of the MVUM to ensure they are in compliance with the travel management policy.
•        As of Aug. 1, all fuelwood permit holders for the Tusayan Ranger District are asked to contact the district office to receive a copy of the MVUM to ensure they are in compliance with the travel management policy.

When TMR is implemented on the Williams and Tusayan districts, fuelwood gathering will continue to be allowed across both districts.  However, motor vehicles will not be allowed to travel cross-country.

In an effort to provide easily accessible fuelwood after TMR is implemented, both the Williams and Tusayan districts will have specific areas identified in which cross-country travel will be allowed for the purposes of gathering fuelwood.  To date, the Williams Ranger District has identified more than 8,000 acres of such areas, with more to be made available in the future.  The Tusayan Ranger District is still assessing which areas can be made available for cross-country travel and expects to have these areas identified in the near future.

For additional information about the fuelwood program on the Williams and Tusayan ranger districts of the Kaibab National Forest, please contact the Williams Ranger District office at (928) 635-5600, 742 S. Clover Rd., Williams, or the Tusayan Ranger District office at (928) 638-2443, 176 Lincoln Log Loop, Grand Canyon, during business hours Monday through Friday.

Additional information on the forest fuelwood program is available on the Kaibab National Forest website at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/kaibab/fuelwood.
